10 Sep A Podiatrists Guide: Restore Healthy Skin & Nails This Spring!
By Laura Kelly, Podiatrist & Clinical Director at The Foot Studio

When it comes to looking after our feet, it’s easy to focus on pain, footwear, or just how things look on the outside. But healthy skin and nails are about so much more – they’re the foundation for comfort, confidence, and mobility.
At The Foot Studio, we see every day how much of a difference it makes when people take proactive care of their skin and nails. It’s not just about having feet you feel good about – it’s about staying active, independent, and avoiding problems before they become serious.
That’s why we’ve developed our Skin & Nail Restoration Plans: a clear, step-by-step way of bringing skin and nail health back on track, with treatments designed to restore and protect.
Our Clinical Approach
We bring together innovation and hands-on podiatry care:
–Lunula Laser – gentle, non-invasive, and clinically proven to help clear fungal nails while stimulating circulation (this means faster treatment times!)
-Debridement – carefully reducing thickened or damaged nails to relieve pressure, improve comfort, and help topical treatments penetrate more effectively.
-Topical Treatments – medical-grade solutions to support healthier regrowth and fight stubborn infections. We use a rotational approach ensuring your body never gets used to the one product. We design different regimes to suit different people and their goals.
Together, these create a solid foundation for healthier, stronger skin and nails.

Why It Matters
Fungal nail infections are more than a cosmetic issue. If left untreated, they can:
– Weaken the nail and surrounding skin, leading to painful and dangerous ingrown toenails
– Lead to painful cracks or wounds
– Allow bacteria to enter, causing secondary infections
– In higher-risk groups, even result in hospitalisation
For elderly patients or those with conditions like diabetes or compromised immune systems, this can have a real impact on overall health. That’s why early intervention and ongoing care is so important. We call this “critical” skin and nail care at The Foot Studio (not routine, or general in any way).
The Role of Lifestyle Changes
While treatments in the clinic make a huge difference, the habits you build at home are just as important. We often remind patients that daily care prevents bigger issues later on.
Here are three key steps we recommend:
1. Wash daily with a low pH wash
Ordinary soaps can strip away your skin’s natural protection. A low pH wash helps maintain balance and keeps the skin healthier, reducing irritation and infection risk. Using products such as Dermaveen, QV body wash or Cerevae.
2. Moisturise with a urea-based emollient
Dry, cracked heels aren’t just uncomfortable – they’re vulnerable. Urea-based creams draw in moisture, soften hard skin, and keep your feet flexible and resilient. We recommend Restorate cream as our favourite.
3. Treat family members at the same time
Fungal infections are contagious. If one person in the household is affected, it’s best to treat family members too, so the infection doesn’t keep spreading back and forth.
