What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS)?
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) is a condition that occurs when the tibial nerve, located near the inner side of the ankle, becomes compressed or entrapped. The tarsal tunnel itself is a narrow space inside the ankle, formed by bones and ligaments. This tunnel houses essential structures, including tendons, blood vessels, and nerves, such as the tibial nerve. When there is compression on the tibial nerve, it can lead to pain, tingling, and numbness in the foot.
Symptoms and Causes of TTS
The main symptom of TTS is pain that can radiate from the ankle into the foot. People with TTS may experience burning, tingling, or a sharp, shooting pain, especially during walking or prolonged standing. In more severe cases, the muscles of the foot may weaken over time, and some people may even notice muscle atrophy or loss of sensation in the foot.
TTS is often caused by repetitive strain, trauma to the ankle, or conditions such as arthritis, which can lead to swelling and compress the tibial nerve. Additionally, individuals with flat feet, ankle sprains, or other structural abnormalities in the foot may be more prone to developing this syndrome.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosing TTS can be challenging, as its symptoms often resemble other foot conditions, such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. Clinicians will typically assess your medical history, perform a physical examination.
At The Foot Studio, we offer various treatments for TTS, tailored to the individual’s needs. These may include gentle exercises to improve flexibility, high-power laser therapy to relax heightened nerve sensations, and rock tape for additional support. Custom orthotics and specific footwear recommendations can assist in proper foot alignment and addressing the underlying cause of the entrapment. Additionally, injection therapies, such as high-volume local anaesthetic injections, are used to release nerve adhesions, providing relief from pain.
It’s important to understand that everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Getting an accurate diagnosis is key, as TTS can present similarly to other conditions like plantar heel pain or Achilles tendinitis. Personalised care and the right treatment plan are essential for effective relief and recovery.
At The Foot Studio, our expert podiatrists are trained to assess and treat Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, helping you get back on your feet with personalised care and treatment plans.
