Why Socks Matter More Than You Think for Running & Triathlon
Runners and triathletes spend a lot of time finding the perfect shoe—but what about socks? The right pair can be the difference between a comfortable, blister-free run and painful feet that make you want to pull out of a race. As a podiatrist, runner, and triathlete, I’ve learned this lesson firsthand.
The Moment I Realised Socks Matter
A few years ago, I lined up for a half marathon feeling confident. My training was solid, my shoes were dialled in, and I was ready to push the pace. But about halfway through, I felt that all-too-familiar hot spot on my heel—the warning sign of a blister. I had made the rookie mistake of wearing worn-out socks with too much cotton, and by the time I finished, I had a huge blister that took me out of running for days.
After that race, I changed my approach. I started testing different brands and styles—looking for socks that could handle sweat, long runs, and tough conditions. Now, I never race or train without high-quality running socks, and I always make sure they match the session I’m doing.
So let’s talk about why the right socks are just as important as your running shoes.
But First—Socks or No Socks on Race Day?
Whether you choose to ride barefoot or in socks on actual race day is completely up to you—and I know every triathlete has their preference here. So I’m not going to focus on race day—that’s your call. But I can’t stress enough the importance of choosing the right pair of socks for training. If you do decide to race without socks, make sure you’ve trialled it properly in training. You want to be confident it works for you and your body—especially when transitioning straight from the swim into the bike.
1. Reduces Blisters & Hot Spots
Blisters form due to friction, heat, and moisture—three things that happen constantly in running and triathlon. Technical running socks reduce friction by providing a smooth interface between your foot and shoe. Seamless designs, anti-blister zones, and snug fits help prevent painful rubbing that can derail your run.
2. Moisture-Wicking = Dry Feet
Sweaty feet are one of the biggest causes of blisters and discomfort. Cotton socks absorb sweat and stay damp, creating the perfect conditions for friction and fungal infections. Technical socks made from moisture-wicking fabrics (like merino wool, Coolmax, or synthetic blends) pull sweat away from your skin, keeping your feet dry and comfortable—even in the toughest sessions.
3. Prevents Fungal Infections & Athlete’s Foot
A warm, damp environment inside your shoes creates the ideal breeding ground for fungal infections like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. If you’ve ever taken your socks off post-run and noticed white, soggy skin between your toes, you know what I’m talking about. The right socks dry quickly and help improve ventilation, reducing the risk of infections.
4. A Better Fit = No Bunching or Slipping
Ill-fitting socks that slide down or bunch up inside your shoe are a nightmare on long runs. I’ve had socks that slowly slip down my heel during training, forcing me to stop and adjust them mid-run. The best socks have arch compression and anatomical left-right shaping, ensuring they stay put—even over long distances.
5. Cushioning & Support Where You Need It
High-mileage runners know that shock absorption matters. The best running socks offer extra cushioning in high-impact areas (like the heel and forefoot), while staying lightweight in the arch and midfoot for breathability and support.
6. Triathletes: Quick-Dry & Chafe-Free
Triathletes have to transition from wet to dry quickly, and socks play a big role in this. Quick-drying, lightweight socks prevent that uncomfortable squelchy feeling after the swim leg and reduce chafing on the bike and run.
Choosing the Right Running Socks: Lightfeet vs Injinji
Different brands use different blends and technologies to optimise performance. Lightfeet socks are designed with CoolMax synthetic fabric, offering exceptional moisture-wicking and durability, making them a great choice for general running and everyday comfort. On the other hand, Injinji toe socks use a mix of merino wool, CoolMax EcoMade, nylon, and Lycra, depending on the model. Their five-toe design is ideal for runners who want to minimise friction between the toes and reduce blisters, especially on long-distance runs.
The key is to match your socks to your activity—whether it’s a high-performance run, an ultra-distance event, or just a comfortable everyday wear option.
