Cracked heels treatment

Dry, thick skin around the heels can split into cracks (heel fissures). Shallow cracks are mostly a nuisance, but deeper ones can be painful, bleed and become infected. Our podiatrists carefully remove the hard skin and help you keep your heels in good condition.

Why heels crack

Hard skin builds up around the edge of the heel and loses its flexibility, so it splits when the heel spreads as you walk. Common contributors include dry skin, open-backed shoes and thongs, long periods standing, warm weather and some health conditions, including diabetes and thyroid conditions.

A fungal skin infection (tinea) is also a common cause that many people don’t realise. It can look like nothing more than dry, flaky skin around the heels, and won’t settle with moisturiser alone. We check for it at your appointment and treat it if it’s there. Read more about fungal infections.

Sometimes advice is all you need

Not everyone needs treatment. Sometimes the most helpful thing is a clear explanation of what’s going on, practical advice and a plan you can manage yourself. We’ll always talk you through every option, including no treatment, so you can decide what’s right for you.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my heels crack more in summer?

Sandals, thongs and bare feet put more load on the edge of the heel, and the skin often gets drier.

How often should I come in?

It depends on how quickly your hard skin builds up. We’ll suggest a timeframe that suits you.

Is a pedicure enough?

For mild dry skin, often yes. For deep, painful or bleeding cracks, or if you have diabetes, see a podiatrist.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with one of our podiatrists.

Can I claim on private health?

We don’t offer on-the-spot claiming. If your extras cover includes podiatry, you can claim with your fund using your itemised receipt. Check with your fund about your level of cover.
