Shockwave therapy

Radial shockwave therapy uses pressure waves delivered through the skin to stimulate blood flow and tissue repair. It’s one of the treatments we may use, alongside exercise and other care, for longer-standing tendon and heel pain.

Conditions we may use shockwave for

How it works

Shockwave, also called radial pressure wave (RPW) therapy, delivers pressure waves through the skin into the sore area. These can stimulate blood flow and collagen production, which tissues need to repair and strengthen, and can calm down pain sensitivity in the area.

Your treatment course

  1. 1

    Assessment

We confirm what’s causing your pain and check that shockwave is suitable for you.

  2. 2

    A course of sessions

Sessions are usually closer together at first, then spaced out. How many you need depends on you and your condition.

  3. 3

    Reviews

We track your progress and adjust your plan as you go.

Each treatment only takes a few minutes. Soft tissues take time to remodel and build new collagen, so the benefits usually build over several weeks, with the early focus on reducing and managing pain.

What it feels like

Why we don’t use shockwave on its own

Shockwave can help settle pain, but on its own it doesn’t address why the problem started. Tendons need a graded loading and strengthening program, otherwise the pain is more likely to come back. That’s why we combine shockwave with a tailored exercise program, the right footwear and orthotics where needed, so you can keep moving and reduce the chance of it coming back.

Who shouldn’t have shockwave

Shockwave isn’t suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy, with some blood-thinning medications and with some medical conditions. We check your health history before starting.

Sometimes advice is all you need

Not everyone needs treatment. Sometimes the most helpful thing is a clear explanation of what’s going on, practical advice and a plan you can manage yourself. We’ll always talk you through every option, including no treatment, so you can decide what’s right for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does shockwave hurt?

It can feel uncomfortable, like little elastic band flicks. Your feedback guides the intensity and we can stop at any time.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on you, your condition and how long it has been going on. We’ll recommend a plan at your assessment and adjust it as you go.

How long until it works?

Benefits usually build over several weeks, as soft tissues remodel and build new collagen. Many people notice less pain straight after a session.

Do I still need to do exercises?

Yes. Shockwave works best as part of a plan that includes exercise and managing load.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with one of our podiatrists.

Can I claim on private health?

We don’t offer on-the-spot claiming. If your extras cover includes podiatry, you can claim with your fund using your itemised receipt. Check with your fund about your level of cover.
